A granny flat is a self-contained living area, located on the grounds of a family home or investment property. It is called a granny flat because it is a popular way for families to accommodate ageing parents, but there are so many reasons to build in the backyard: home office, teen retreat, space for adult children saving to buy a home, artist’s studio, the list goes on. And let’s not forget that a second dwelling on your property is a fabulous investment!
Under the NSW Government’s State Environment Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009 – commonly referred to as AHSEPP – a granny flat must not exceed 60m2 of internal living space.
